Fudan University Affiliated Shanghai Fifth People's Hospital is a comprehensive university affiliated hospital that integrates clinical practice, scientific research, and teaching. The hospital, formerly known as the "westerner isolation hospital" founded by the British in 1904, was nationalized in 1945. In 1960, the hospital was moved to Heqing Road, Minhang District as a whole. In December 2010, the hospital passed the evaluation of a Grade III Grade B comprehensive hospital. In May 2018, the hospital was approved to be named "Shanghai Red Cross Fifth People's Hospital". In March 2020, the hospital was licensed as an Internet hospital, which is one of the first public hospitals in Shanghai to carry out Internet medical services.

As early as 1948, the hospital signed a teaching agreement with the former National Shanghai Medical College and became the clinical teaching base of the former Shanghai First Medical College in 1961. In 1989, it was re recognized as the original teaching hospital of Shanghai Medical University by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Shanghai Health Bureau, and Shanghai Medical University. In September 1998, the Minhang District People's Government and the former Shanghai Medical University officially signed a district school co construction agreement. In October 2004, after being assessed and approved by the Shanghai Health Bureau and the Shanghai Education Commission, the hospital officially became an affiliated hospital of Fudan University.

The hospital currently covers an area of 54044 square meters (approximately 81 acres), with a construction area of nearly 120000 square meters.
